I've never actually tested my download speed from both sites to see which loads images faster, but with uploading Google seems to come in a bit faster. I agree that there are a lot of things that Google Needs in order to really make a splash, they need more integration with their other products. With Calender and Documents being two of the the big ones in my opinion. It's good that there is a strong competition here. Remember how it used to be that MySpace was the place to be? I'm just glad that neither company is trying to go all sue happy on each other to try and push themselves over the top.
